Wonderful vampire novel that reminds me to excellent franchises like Underworld and Blade, still having a high school setting. To begin with, it is easy to like the main heroine, Zoey Redbird that in a way is like a mixture between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sydney Fox from Relic Hunter. Particularly, Marked is an original story with typical characters from an American high school. It achieves to transmit a strong representation of the Eternal Five Elements present in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and the Eternal Cycle of Life and Death. Another positive aspect of the novel it is the symbolism behind being marked with the Crescent Moon and the struggle to change or die; as a magical metaphor for real life illnesses. Apart from the deep messages in the story, Marked shows more lighter themes like friendship despite being completely different (such as Zoey’s best friend Steve Rae) and an appreciation for family having the wisdom of Zoey’s grandmother throughout the novel. I hope Marked becomes a movie adaptation or TV series soon so that the new generations can enjoy as a fresh beginning to the vampire genre.
