2025 Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake 2: Top 5 Goshos by Buddha Nichiren Daishonin

Top 5 Goshos by Buddha Nichiren Daishonin

Discover my new video showing the top 5 Goshos in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism.

New Year of the Wood Snake 2

1. “Reply to the Widow of Lord Ueno”: Those who practice ever more sincerely when they listen to the teachings of the Lotus Sutra are the true devotees of the Way. Tiantai said, “From the indigo to an even deeper blue.” In essence, this means that something dyed with indigo becomes increasingly bluer than the leaves of the indigo plant. The Lotus Sutra is like the indigo. When we deepen our practice, it is like the indigo blue that grows in intensity. (Gosho, p. 337)

2. Once we chant Myoho-Renge-Kyo, this sound calls forth and manifests the Buddha nature of all Buddhas, all phenomena, all bodhisattvas, all people in the world of learning, all guardian deities, such as Bonten, Taishaku, King Emma, the sun and moon, innumerable stars, deities of the heavens and earth, and all living beings—including individuals in the worlds of hell, hunger, animality, anger, humanity, and rapture. The benefit of revealing this Buddha nature is immeasurable and unfathomable. (Gosho, p. 1320)

3. Reply to Myoho ama”: Face powder can change the color of black lacquer to white, just like snow. When living beings approach Mount Sumeru, they assume a golden hue. Those who embrace the title of the Lotus Sutra will expiate the negative karma that they have accumulated in this lifetime and since the remotest past—transforming negative karma into the great merit of positive karma. Certainly, all the positive causes from time without beginning will turn to gold. (Gosho, p. 1483)

4. “Letter from Sado”: When an evil ruler tries to destroy the true Law, and heretical priests support his efforts to do away with a person of wisdom, one who maintains the heart of the lion king will definitely attain Buddhahood. This is true of Nichiren. I say this not out of arrogance, rather because I have a strong mind to protect the true Law that I hold so dear. Fear always arises in the hearts of arrogant people when they encounter a strong enemy. They are like the arrogant asura who shrank in terror and hid in a lotus flower in Lake Anavatapta when he was confronted by Heavenly King Taishaku. If one practices even a single character or phrase of the true Law in accordance with the time and capacity of the people, one definitely will attain Buddhahood. On the other hand, even though one masters a thousand sutras and ten thousand treatises, if the teaching does not accord with the correct time and capacity, it will never lead to enlightenment. (Gosho, p. 579)

5. “Sado gokanki-sho: Incurring the Displeasure of the Authorities Leading to the Sado Exile”: As for the path to becoming a Buddha, it can be concluded that one can attain Buddhahood only by enduring an event that might put one’s life at risk … Only by going through such hardships could I read the Lotus Sutra with my life. With this understanding, I can summon up even more faith and look forward to my next life … If I can lay down my life, a life that would have been lost in vain, for the sake of the Lotus Sutra, it will be likened to turning a stone into gold. Thus, each one of you need not lament over my circumstances. (Gosho, pp. 482-483).

2025 Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake: Transformation thanks to Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism

The lesser vehicles of the ancient religions will be transformed and embraced by the Great Vehicle of Mahayana Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. The powers of the Buddha and the Law enter our existence, purifying our minds, extinguishing our evil karma (past and present) and planting seeds of wisdom, compassion and virtue. By believing in the great power of the Dai-Gohonzon no matter what kind of karma we possess we can achieve the great benefit of changing poison into medicine (hendoku iyaku).

The Island & Aeon Flux

Two of the best movies that deal with human clones and past lives that I would recommend are the Island and Aeon Flux. Curiously, both of them are from the same year: 2005.

Nichiren Shoshu Oeshiki Ceremony: October 13

Buddha Nichiren Daishonin passed away on October 13th, 1282 at the Hour of the Dragon (around eight o’clock in the morning) at the residence of Munenaka in Ikegami, Province of Musashi. At the time of his death, there was an earthquake and the cherry trees in the garden bloomed out of season. Between October and November, in the Head Temple Taisekiji and in local temples worldwide celebrate the Oeshiki Ceremony.

For this month Oeshiki Ceremony, I would like to share the Gosho quote from Myosetsuji Temple in New York.

Gosho Quote for October 2020

On Persecution Befalling the Buddha (Shonin gona ji)

The four kinds of punishment consist of the general and individual, and the conspicuous and inconspicuous. The great epidemics and national famines, the extensive uprisings, and the foreign invasion occurring in Japan are general punishment. Epidemics are also a form of inconspicuous punishment. [The deaths experienced by] Ota and the others rep-resent conspicuous and individual punishment. Each one of you must summon up the spirit of the lion king and never cower to those who may threaten you in any way. The lion king is never intimidated by even a hundred beasts, and the same is true of its cubs. [Those who slander] are like howling jackals, while the followers of Nichiren are like roaring lions.(Gosho, p. 1397)

In Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, there is a religious tolerance while at the same time having the Buddhist mission, Shakubuku, of propagating the Lotus Sutra and protect our loved ones. Myself I was tolerant and influenced mainly by Theravada Buddhism from the Kingdom of Thailand and Islam from England / Spain.

S.A Chakraborty Fantasy world: The City of Brass & The Kingdom of Copper

From the complex magic world of Daevadad, the fantasy story centers on the use of magic and some influence from Islam in settings and demons. Particularly interesting how the relationship evolves in the love triangle of the protagonists:

1. DARAYAVAHOUSH, known by the nickname of "Dara" is a demon Afshin, a Daeva military caste family which served the Nahid Council. He was known as the Scourge of Qui-zi for his violent acts during the war and later revolt against Zaydi al Qahtani. Among his powers are mind reading, fire, and the command of the magic swords called Zulfiquar.

2. NAHRI, a poor orphan and thief from Egypt. She meets Dara and discovers to be a magic healer from the Nahid of the Daeva tribe. With her powers she can save the lives of many magic beings.

3. ALIZAYD, known by the nickname of "Ali", he has a mixed-blood background. Ali is the youngest son of the Qahtani King Ghassan and of the marid, sea demon, descent Queen Hatset. After being drowned in the lake, Ali mixed with the marid and acquired the sea demon powers.

Looking forward to read the last part of the Trilogy, the Empire of Gold. From my perspective, thanks to S.A. Chakraborty use of Islam as a source for fantasy, it is parallel to the Japanese Yokai. The present time fantasy genre and religion are mixed together. As an example of this mixture from the Japanese influence I would recommend to see the Tokyo Mosque.

Oeshiki Ceremony : Cherry trees in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism

In Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, cherry trees and the Sakura flower, cherry blossom, are the symbol of Buddha Nichiren Daishonin's death on October 13, 1282, and how his life was remembered and felt in the world at that moment: The cherry trees bloomed out of season and a big earthquake shook the area.

Enjoy my video selection for this symbol of the cherry blossom:

Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism: April 28, 1253

Nichiren Daishonin, as a 12-year-old boy, made a vow to become the wisest person in Japan. In a later writing, he said that, at that time, he was presented with a great jewel of unsurpassed wisdom “as brilliant as the morning star.”

[...]

On April 28, 1253, Nichiren Daishonin revealed and first chanted the original and fundamental law of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, which was to be spread in the Latter Day of the Law (now).

[...]

There are two meanings to the Daimoku. There is the Daimoku of the Former (Shobo) and the Middle Days (Zobo) of the Law, and the Daimoku of the Latter Day of the Law (Mappo). During the age of the Former Day of the Law, Bodhisattvas Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu secretly chanted Daimoku, yet they stopped short of revealing it. Nan-yueh and T’ien-t’ai of the Middle Day of the Law, both chanted Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, but also did not widely spread the five characters to others. They kept it secret among themselves. This, then is called the theoretical practice of Daimoku. Now in the Latter Day of the Law, the Daimoku invoked by Nichiren has never before been revealed; it is the Daimoku of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo which encompasses the two practices of jigyo and keta, for oneself and for others.
